Common name: Madagascar Senna
Botanical name: Senna meridionalis
This unusual caudiciform plant is native to Madagascar and prized for its thick, sculptural trunk and delicate fern-like foliage. Over time, the trunk becomes increasingly textured and bonsai-like, making it a favorite among caudex collectors.
Light: Bright light to full sun. The more light it receives, the more compact and attractive the growth.
Water: Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Water more frequently during active growth and reduce watering significantly during dormancy.
Humidity: Average household humidity is fine.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures and should be protected from frost.
Soil: Fast-draining cactus or caudex mix with excellent drainage.
Dormancy: May drop some or all of its leaves during cooler months or periods of stress. This is normal and not necessarily a sign of poor health.
Pet safe: Considered toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and children.
Fun fact: Senna meridionalis can live for many years and develop a dramatic swollen trunk that resembles a miniature tree, making each specimen more unique with age.
