When I begin a new painting, I focus on the eyes and face of each bird I am painting.  This is the soul of the piece.  If I can get a feeling of life and presence in the face, then I know that the painting will have life as well.  Great Horned Owls have a particular intensity in their eyes.  A look of strong purpose and an awesome presence that is both fearless and fragile.  That they can continue in the midst of our bustling world is a miracle.
