Finding a bit that offers enough 'brakes' without overwhelming a sensitive horse can be a challenge. The Shires Equikind Beval Jointed Mouth S/Steel bit is designed to bridge that gap, featuring an apple-flavored synthetic mouthpiece that stays warm to the touch. This unique material encourages salivation and a soft, relaxed mouth from the moment you bridle up, making it a go-to choice for horses that are typically 'metal-shy' or fussy with traditional stainless steel.
Unlike bulky traditional rubber bits, this 15mm slim profile fits comfortably even in horses with lower palates or fleshy tongues. The Beval (or Wilkie) cheek design offers a clever bit of versatility, providing a subtle poll pressure that helps you maintain a rounded frame and better steering without the severity of a full gag or pelham. It’s a reliable tool built for the long haul, whether you're schooling at home or heading into the jumping ring.
Show jumping, eventing, or hunter riders looking for a gentle way to gain more control and poll pressure with a sensitive horse.
No, because of the leverage action provided by the Beval cheek design, this bit is generally not legal for USEF or BD dressage competitions. It is, however, very popular for jumping and schooling.
We recommend the '1/4-inch rule' for the Shires Equikind Beval—you should see about 5mm of the mouthpiece on either side of the lips to ensure the ring holes don't pinch the skin during use.
Absolutely. It is an excellent 'stepping stone' bit for horses that need slightly more than a basic snaffle but aren't ready for the severity of a gag or pelham.
