Back reflections and signals may cause intensity noise and optical damage to lasers.  Polarization Maintaining Fiber Isolators (PMI) transmit light in the forward direction while absorbing or displacing light propagating in the reverse direction which protect the laser from noise and damaging, also reduce the polarization dirfting related noise.
