If you've ever felt like your horse is using your hands as a fifth leg, the Shires Waterford Dee Bit is the tool you've been looking for. Designed specifically for horses that like to lean, grab the bit, or take hold, the unique multi-jointed mouthpiece makes it nearly impossible for them to fix their jaw and pull against you. It’s a game-changer for regaining responsiveness without needing to move to a high-leverage curb.
This bit isn't about being harsh; it's about being flexible. The "ball-and-chain" design of the Shires Waterford Dee Bit molds perfectly to the horse's mouth, encouraging a softer feel and better self-carriage. From our barn to yours, we recommend this for those spirited jumpers or eventers who get a little too bold toward the fences and need a clear reminder to stay light in the bridle.
The jumping or eventing rider looking for more control over a strong horse that tends to lean or pull without resorting to a leverage bit.
Because of the multi-link design, you should size up by 1/4" to 1/2" compared to your horse's standard snaffle size. This extra length allows the bit to wrap comfortably around the tongue; if it is fitted too snugly, the joints can pinch the corners of the mouth.
While the Dee-ring is common in many rings, the Waterford mouthpiece itself is generally not legal for Dressage or traditional Hunter Under Saddle classes. We always recommend checking your specific association's current rulebook before heading to the show.
The Shires Waterford Dee Bit is considered a corrective bit. While it is flexible and follows the contours of the mouth, it should be used by riders with steady, experienced hands who understand how to use the multi-jointed action effectively.
