Burning the Ancient Way: How to Use Your Resin

How do I burn resin incense on a charcoal disc? Resin incense releases its fragrance only when heated — it requires a self-lighting charcoal disc and a heat-safe burner rather than an open flame or incense stick holder. The process is simple and deeply satisfying once you have worked through it once. You will find charcoal discs and brass burners in our incense collection. Prepare your space before you begin — open a window, settle your intention, and allow yourself the gift of a few unhurried minutes. When your session is complete, wave the flame out rather than blowing — a small honouring of the spirit held within the plant's resin.

Step-by-step ritual method

1. Prepare your burner: Place a heat-safe brass, ceramic or soapstone burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Half-fill it with sand, rice or ash to insulate against heat and steady the charcoal disc.
2. Light the charcoal: Using metal tongs (never bare fingers), hold a self-lighting charcoal disc and touch the edge to a lighter flame. The disc will spark and crackle briefly — this is normal. Set it hollow-side up on the sand.
3. Wait for the grey ash: Allow 2–5 minutes for a thin grey ash to form across the surface of the disc. This signals the charcoal is evenly heated and ready. Placing resin on a disc that is not yet fully lit produces harsh, acrid smoke.
