The Hioki DT4200 Series is a line of handheld digital multimeters engineered, based on extensive customer feedback, to deliver the design and quality needed to ensure safety in field measurement. The series is organized into high-end, standard, and pocket model groups, each built around a dedicated IC that Hioki developed in-house to provide what it describes as the world's fastest DMM engine. Every group offers True RMS measurement so that even distorted current waveforms are read accurately.
Across the series, the DT4200 instruments address a range of field and laboratory tasks: fast, accurate measurement of the output voltage on the secondary side of an inverter, with a low-pass filter that rejects harmonic components to isolate the fundamental wave; no-load voltage inspection of megasolar and photovoltaic installations, with the DT4254 measuring DC voltages up to 1700 V; measurement of the very low currents used by gas-burning devices, using a dedicated DC microamp range for burner flame currents; 4 to 20 mA instrumentation signal measurement shown as a percentage-equivalent value; ripple voltage confirmation of DC charging systems; and voltage measurement at distribution panels and service wires.
ValueTronics stocks and holds its own inventory in a 20,000 sq ft secure warehouse at 1675 Cambridge Drive in Elgin, Illinois.
The Hioki DT4200 Series is presented in three model groups. High-end models (DT4281, DT4282) feature high accuracy, extensive additional functionality, and a broad range of measurement parameters. Standard models (DT4252, DT4253, DT4254, DT4255, DT4256) are field-optimized instruments chosen by application, and pocket models (DT4221, DT4222, DT4223, DT4224) pair a compact body with a reliable, safe design.
Within these groups, individual models are tuned to specific tasks — for example, the DT4254 for no-load voltage inspection of megasolar installations, the DT4253 for 4 to 20 mA instrumentation and gas-burning equipment, and the DT4255 for voltage measurement with fuse-protected terminals. The DT4223 and DT4224 add the series' new circuit breaker false trip prevention function.
Each new model linked below is its own dedicated product page with condition-matched pricing. Select the specific model and configuration that fits your application.
The model groups differ most clearly in accuracy and safety category. Typical DC voltage accuracy ranges from ±0.025% rdg. ±2 dgt. on high-end models to ±0.3% on standard models and ±0.5% on pocket models, while measurement categories step from CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V on high-end and standard models down to CAT III 600 V / CAT IV 300 V on pocket models. Voltage range also varies, with the DT4254 extending to 1500 V (and up to 1700 V DC under the isolation conditions noted) where other models top out at 1000 V or 600 V.
Measurement parameters and functions are assigned per model, as shown in the comparison table that follows. Capabilities such as AC clamp-on current, temperature, capacitance, conductance, AC/DC automatic detection, voltage detection, peak measurement, internal memory, and the circuit breaker false trip prevention function are present on some models and absent on others — refer to each model's own row in the comparison table for its exact supported parameters rather than assuming a model inherits a sibling's functions.

Important: DT4254 measurement of voltages in excess of 1000 V DC (up to 1700 V DC) is specified only when the circuit under measurement is isolated from the commercial power grid and isolated from ground.
Important: Adapter Model 9704 is required to connect AC Clamp On Probes 9010-50, 9018-50, and 9132-50 to the DT4281, DT4253, DT4255, and DT4256. The clamp-on probes are optional and sold separately; clamp accuracy does not include the error of the clamp-on probe.
Important: USB communication requires the optional DT4900-01 Communication Package (communication cable, communication adapter, PC software, instruction manual; OS: Windows 8.1/8/7, Vista SP1 or later).
Important: The optional Connection Cable L4930 is required in order to use the deep-set / busbar probe tips shown for the DT4250 Series / DT4280 Series.
Important: The K Thermocouple DT4910 is required for temperature measurement (DT4281, DT4282, DT4253); temperature accuracy does not include the error of the K thermocouple.
Important: Compatible probe tips vary with the DMM model (see datasheet). The red-screen backlight is available on high-end models and DT4223/DT4224 only.
