The Keel SE is Linn's reference sub-chassis for the LP12. It integrates the sub-chassis and armboard into a single precision-machined aluminium component, and it represents the current pinnacle of what Linn has achieved in this particular engineering discipline. The Keel SE ships as standard on the Klimax LP12, and it is the correct choice for any LP12 owner building to the highest level.
If you are currently running a Kore or an original Keel and are looking for the next step up, the Keel SE is a substantial upgrade — not an incremental one.
The Keel SE is machined from a single piece of aerospace-grade aluminium. There are no bonded joints, no separate armboard, no material interfaces. The underside of the component features an intricate bracing structure developed using both manual and computer-aided optimisation methods — the geometry is designed to maximise stiffness in the directions that matter while minimising mass overall.
The result is a sub-chassis that is 300% stiffer than earlier Keel designs. That stiffness figure matters because it directly affects how the sub-chassis handles acoustic energy: a stiffer structure raises the frequency of its resonant modes and lowers the energy stored at those modes. The Keel SE moves unwanted resonances well away from the audio band and dissipates them before they can colour the signal from the cartridge.
The weight distribution across the suspension springs is also optimised — the machining beneath the armboard shifts the centre of mass to improve balance on all three springs, which contributes to a more consistent and stable suspension behaviour.
The Keel SE requires the Karousel bearing.
Owners upgrading from a Kore typically report tighter bass, cleaner treble extension, better stereo imaging, and — critically — improved timing. The LP12's musical character is about rhythm and pace, and a stiffer, better-damped sub-chassis allows more of that character to come through without overhang or smear. Background noise drops, low-level detail improves, and the whole presentation becomes more coherent.
The Keel SE is at its best paired with the Ekos SE tonearm — the two components form a system at the reference level.

The Keel SE is for LP12 owners committed to reference-level performance. It makes the most sense as part of a full high-specification build — Keel SE, Ekos SE, Karousel, Radikal, and a high-end cartridge such as the Ekstatik or Kandid. That combination is the Klimax LP12 specification, and each component reinforces the others.
For Kore owners, the Keel SE is the single biggest structural upgrade available to the LP12 platform. The jump in performance is not proportional to the price — it exceeds it.
Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Linn range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Ted Martin's daughter Elizabeth runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
Fitting the Keel SE requires full LP12 disassembly, professional suspension setup, and arm alignment — this is not a DIY installation, and attempting it without proper experience risks damaging the bearing and misaligning the tonearm. Martins can carry out the complete fitting as part of our LP12 servicing work.
