Yes. You would better to use double door overlapping hardware.

Would a 12' door need a 24' track?
Yes , usually track length need at least twice of the door panel width. Add extra 4-6" would be perfect.
Quite simple 3 steps to help you decide barn door track length:
1. measure the door openning width. i.g. 32"
2. Double this measurement. 32"x2=64"
3. Add 4-6" to last step. 64"+5"=69" (6' length)
