The story of this distillery is not the most profound but do to its limited history and abrupt shuttering as well as the spectacular quality we've had glimpses of from the wee bits of whisky that have eeked out of their over the years, we are always on the lookout for new bottlings. The best of the best have come from the original distillery stocks now owned by Diageo. This 1989 is part of the 2018 Special Releases and comes from whisky aged for 28 years in re-fill American Oak hogsheads. Bottled, as is the custom for this range, at a natural cask strength with a limited run of 4,680 bottles for the world making every bottle from this distillery that was officially closed for good in 1993, incredibly precious. Pittyvaich whiskies have a reputation for being idiosyncratic but we find this malt to be quite the opposite with an overall charming and appealing nature.
The aromas are centered on notes of cooked malt that takes turns mingling with perfectly ripe tropical fruits, candied ginger, raw flax, fresh cut sugar cane, pumpkin seed and coconut.
The palate turns to more citrus and spice flavors as the slippery texture glides the whisky across the palate picking up notes of white chocolate and hints of tobacco along the way. A classic in the best possible way.
